We all want to be happy and enjoy peace of mind. These seem to be universal basic human values.
Our culture tends to offer us substitutes that are said to achieve the same ends: money, property, sex, social status, relationships, recognition and so forth. Although all these can bring about temporary pleasure, if you forget your basic needs, you may find that, although you have achieved many things in life, you remain unsatisfied.
Meditation and spiritual work involve remaining focused, moment by moment, on your basic needs. All the rest remain, but as means to achieving these rather than ends in themselves. This way you have a greater chance of finding true self-fulfillment.
