Questioner: Is meditation being relaxed?
Jonathan: Natural meditation, resting in the unconditioned mind, is independent of whether you are relaxed or not. Being relaxed is a physical and mental state, that like all states, comes and goes.
Meditation is closer to unconditional stability. In the unconditioned mind you are less affected, ultimately unaffected, by what happens in your surroundings, in your body and in your mind.
Nevertheless, meditation does tend to generate a relaxed, restful way of being. As a Tibetan woman teacher said, “Highly alert, deeply relaxed.” And the great Tibetan yogi Longchenpa, stated, “Resting in natural awareness.”
Enjoy your meditation, whether relaxed or not.
